BAT OUT OF CREATURE-DESIGN HELL.
PIC INFO: Resolution at 1512x2016 -- Spotlight on Bat-creature (Dracula's monstrous bat form, perhaps?) concept art from 2004's "Van Helsing." Artwork by Constantine Sekeris.
"Here is a unused design Bat-Creature rough sketch for the "Van Helsing" movie... at the time practical FX were still popular and this was going to b a practical suit with a animitronic head."

Being a Jace fan is suffering. Like striping Jace of all the things he does in the book and reducing him to just bastardy issues wasn't enough...
Let's not forget that to this day Vermax is still one of the only dragons we haven't fully seen in the show, for reasons
We only get to briefly see him in season 1 episode 10 for seconds (and it was just an upscaled version of his younger model) and again we only see his head for seconds in this season.
The only thing we have are these beautiful official concept arts of Vermax by Constantine Sekeris, and it seems like they decided not to use them in the show anyway lol

New Release Review: Werewolves Within
Tumblr media
Werewolves Within is based on Ubisoft's 2016 video game of the same name, but familiarity with the source material is not necessary to enjoy the film. Director Josh Ruben (Scare Me) promptly and exquisitely establishes the film's tone in the first 15 seconds, in which a quote appears on screen in an angular font accompanied by an ominous score before attributing the source: Mr. Rogers. It's an apt representation of the movie that follows; a refreshing comedic romp built on horror and mystery tropes.
The plot centers on Finn Wheeler (Sam Richardson, Veep), a forest ranger arriving at his new station in the quaint town of Beaverfield precisely 29.5 days after a mysterious disappearance. He quickly hits it off with "mail person" Cecily (Milana Vayntrub, This Is Us), who introduces him to the colorful townspeople and their petty gossip. Tensions run high, as a proposed gas pipeline has divided the population between those who are eager for the payout and those who are concerned about the environmental impact.
Tumblr media
Among the townsfolk are innkeeper Jeanine (Catherine Curtin, Stranger Things), gas tycoon Sam Parker (Wayne Duvall, The Hunt), environmentalist Dr. Ellis (Rebecca Henderson, Russian Doll), affluent gay couple Joachim (Harvey Guillén, What We Do in the Shadows) and Devon (Cheyenne Jackson, American Horror Story), conservative middle-aged couple Pete (Michael Chernus, Orange is the New Black) and Trisha (Michaela Watkins, Casual), trashy loons Marcus (George Basil, Crashing) and Gwen (Sarah Burns, Enlightened), and reclusive hunter Emerson Flint (Glenn Fleshler, Billions).
With danger lurking outside after all the generators in town are destroyed and the life of a beloved dog is taken, the group holes up in the inn for safety in numbers - only to come to the conclusion that someone among them is a lycanthrope. The werewolf effects are used sparingly but effectively to maintain the mystery, leading to the finale's big reveal. The creature is designed by concept artist Constantine Sekeris (Avengers: Endgame, The Predator) and brought to life via special effects makeup by Louie Zakarian (Saturday Night Live, Hubie Halloween).

Ruben proved his effortless talent in balancing horror and comedy while creatively working within the confines of a low budget on Scare Me. Armed with more resources and a punchy script by Mishna Wolff (her first produced feature), his sophomore effort reinforces that skill set while impressively juggling an ensemble cast. It's also deftly paced, with nary a moment of filler among the 96 minutes. With such an effective one-two punch, Ruben is certainly a filmmaker to watch.
After regularly stealing scenes on Veep and co-leading the criminally underrated Detroiters, Richardson has earned the leading role in a feature. I suspect many more to follow, as his comedic timing, deadpan delivery, and charming naiveté are impeccable. Many of the movie's funniest moments stem from the awkwardly budding relationship between Richardson and Vayntrub's characters in the first act. Once the ensemble assembles, the entire cast fires on all cylinders. It's also nice to see characters representing various races, sexualities, ages, economic classes, and political beliefs.
Tumblr media
Taking cues from the werewolf whodunit The Beast Must Die along with comedic send-ups to Agatha Christie mysteries like Clue and Knives Out, Werewolves Within is one of the year's most delightful genre efforts as well as one of the best video game adaptations. The key to its success lies in Ruben and Wolff's smart decision to place equal focus on the humor and the whodunit. With no shortage of red herrings, the mystery continuously builds between the many laugh-out-loud moments.
Werewolves Within will be released on select theaters on June 25 and on VOD on July 2 via IFC Films.
